Every dictator has his time and place just as every other person in this world. They have a duty to the people as the people have a higher duty to make their leader accountable for his or her actions. The years of dictators are vanishing through the rise of popular resistance, which inevitably results in the overthrow of that corrupt government. However a bigger risk will come if the next leaders of our country is not kept in check once in power. From the president to our local representatives, all needs to understand that they are given a job to serve the people. The people should not go to them, instead, they should go to the people. The country's environment must always be a top priority and must be protected when it comes to foreign investment or local projects that has a chance of destroying the country's natural beauty as seen in other capitalist countries around the world. We as Maldivians can take our country through modernization, but without destroying the environment as the big developed countries have. With capitalism will always come greed, hence everything needs a middle ground and a system of check and balance. People can talk a lot, but look at their history to see if they will act on it. When it comes to the redemption, without being able to admit the wrongs of ones past, its hard to change for the better good. At the same time, people needs to be forgiving if one is able to admit their wrongs. Politicians needs to be clean in the end of each day. People needs to educate their children in ways of critical questioning with respect and patience to the one being questioned. Maldives is still young, but it has a bright future as it has many young leaders ready to help their people.
