We are living in a country where; the rulers measure the success of their rule by the number of youths they have murdered; the rulers, from top to bottom, are corrupt; record-breaking violations of human rights in shape and form; we face forced migration. In the public squares we are beaten by police. Our sons and daughters are massacre on jail and in the streets. Our islands are deserted. our national and human honor is trampled upon; our languages (Addu, Fuvah-mulah, Huvadhoo) are banned in our schools; thousands of our people are left unemployed; our people left homeless after the 2004 tsunami; vicious exploitation takes place; differences in income increase with every day that passes.

Now what can we expect in the New Year?

NEW PRESIDENT

Personally I want see the end of present regime. I don’t want go in detail why I want see a new president for this country. One thing I can assure you is if Gayyoom remains in power, of course, the people of this country have to suffer for another 5 years more. He is the creator of all our problems. He is not the solution for our country.

NEW CONSTITUTION

I never thought and I do not think of the new constitution as an academic work or an article which will stay on paper. I want see the new constitution unite us and move towards the democracy and liberation.

NEW MALDIVES

We are the real owners of this country. The values of this country are ours.  The power of people is based on struggle and organization in unity. There is nothing more powerful than organized people who can make decisions in every area and join the debates to produce ideas and solutions. This power can do anything if it so wishes and can take anything if it so wishes.

Maldives (People) have paid heavily and still do, in order to have the independence and democracy which is what the new constitution means. This constitution is being drawn up because of these deprivations. Any kind of interference with the power, independence, democracy and the common interests of the people will be a violation of this constitution. The people have gained them by bearing a heavy price; they have the right to defend it with the same determination.

It will be our duty, for our children who will inherit the country, for the martyrs who struggled for independence and democracy and for the future of the people and humanity.
